Why men’s skin gets so oily in the summer and how to stop it

We're going to dive into the oily world of summer skincare.

Picture this: the sun's out, the heat's cranked up, and suddenly, you’re shining like a glazed donut. Don't worry, it's not just you – summer has a habit of turning all our faces into oil slicks.

But fear not, we've got some solutions to keep your skin looking fresh, not deep fried...

Understanding Sebum

Let's talk sebum, what is it? It’s the oil your skin produces to stay hydrated, without it you’d have a painfully crusty face. In summer, the heat and humidity kicks those sebaceous glands into overdrive meaning they’ll produce more oil, and as men this isn’t always great news as we already have more sebaceous glands than women meaning we can produce up to twice the amount of oil.

Male skin + humidity = lots of oil

Heat and skin

Let’s not forget as humans, we get sweaty in the summer. Back, crack and…face, it’s unavoidable, but when you think of all that sweat mixing with the extra oil on our faces it’s a recipe for clogged pores and acne breakouts.

So what can you do to keep your skin looking tiptop throughout the summer months?

Tips for Managing Oily Skin in Summer

1. Cleansing: A good cleanser twice a day will help wash away all that excess oil and sweat, leaving your skin feeling + looking fresh and clean.

2. Mattifying Moisturisers: Say goodbye to heavy, greasy moisturisers and hello to lightweight, oil preventing formulas. Your skin will thank you for the breath of fresh air.

3. Skincare extras: Need a midday touch-up? Grab some oil-absorbing sheets or powders to keep shine at bay.

4. Sunscreen: Don't ever skip the sunscreen. We’re talking everyday and reapplying every 2 hours.

5. Hydration: H2O! Make sure you’re staying hydrated especially if you’re out and about. Drinking water helps balance out your skin's oil production, so drink it like you’re being paid for it.

Summer selfcare

Now remember, although it’s VERY important, it's not just about what you slather on your face – it’s also the other choices you make in the day. What you eat, what you drink, your mood. So look after yourself on the inside and the outside this summer and every season.
